We hear “drink more water” all the time. But here’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: hydration isn’t only about how much water you drink. How you drink it matters too.
Water makes up a large portion of the human body, which is one reason hydration matters so much. Water supports circulation, digestion, temperature regulation, kidney function, and overall fluid balance. In other words, water is involved in a lot more than just quenching your thirst.
And yes, we’ve all heard the saying, “Milk does the body good.” I’ll leave that conversation for another day. But water? Water absolutely does the body good.
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
Drinking a large amount of water very quickly can temporarily dilute the concentration of your blood. Your body responds by helping remove the excess fluid, which is one reason gulping a lot of water at once may send you to the bathroom sooner.
Of course, this doesn't mean drinking a full glass of water is bad. It simply means you don’t have to force huge amounts at one time trying to “catch up” on hydration.
Drinking smaller amounts throughout the day can make hydration easier to maintain. It gives your body a steadier supply of fluid while replacing what you naturally lose through breathing, perspiration, and normal body functions.
Your hydration needs also change. A hot day, a long walk, exercise, illness, or heavy sweating can increase the amount of fluid your body needs. And don’t forget that fruits and vegetables contribute to hydration too. Water doesn’t have to do all the work by itself.
Here’s another important point: more isn’t always better.
Carrying around a gallon jug isn’t necessary, but drinking enough water is. Drinking excessive amounts in a short period can upset the body’s electrolyte balance in extreme cases. The point isn’t to see how much water you can force down. What matters is staying adequately hydrated.
Pay attention to thirst. Drink regularly. Eat water-rich foods. Replenish after movement or sweating. And notice how your body responds.
Hydration should support your body. Let water refresh you.
